Measure Words: Beyond "个" and "只"

  1. Why Use Measure Words?

    • Measure words "classify" nouns based on their shape, category, or characteristics.

    • Using the wrong measure word sounds unnatural but usually doesn't hinder understanding.

  2. Common Measure Words and Their Uses:

    • 个 (gè): The most universal, safest measure word, usable for people, objects, places, etc. (e.g., 一人 a person, 一苹果 an apple, 一国家 a country)

    • 张 (zhāng): Used for flat or spread-out objects. (e.g., 一纸 a piece of paper, 一桌子 a table, 一票 a ticket, 一照片 a photo)

    • 把 (bǎ): Used for objects with a handle or that can be gripped. (e.g., 一椅子 a chair, 一刀 a knife, 一伞 an umbrella)

    • 条 (tiáo): Used for long, narrow, flexible objects. (e.g., 一河 a river, 一路 a road, 一鱼 a fish, 一裤子 a pair of trousers)

    • 只 (zhī): Used for animals, body parts (hands, feet), or one of a pair of items. (e.g., 一猫 a cat, 一鸟 a bird, 一手 a hand, 一鞋 a shoe)

    • 辆 (liàng): Used for vehicles. (e.g., 一汽车 a car, 一自行车 a bicycle)

    • 件 (jiàn): Used for matters, clothing (tops, dresses), or luggage. (e.g., 一事 a matter, 一衣服 an article of clothing, 一行李 a piece of luggage)

  3. Important Notes:

    • 你有个苹果? (How many apples do you have? - Expecting a small number)

    • 你们学校有多少个学生? (How many students are in your school? - Expecting a large number)

    • 我喜欢吃一种水果。 (I like to eat a type of fruit.)

    • "一" + Measure Word can indicate "generic reference."

    • When asking questions, use "" for small, specific quantities and "多少" for larger or uncertain quantities; both are usually followed by a measure word.

Summary: Treat measure words as "partners" of nouns. The best way to learn them is to memorize them together with the nouns.
