Introduction:
In English, we often say "I looked, but I didn't see it." In Chinese, you can combine these two ideas into one word using a Result Complement. This is a verb that shows the result of an action. It's a key part of reaching fluency at the HSK4 level.

What is a Result Complement?
It's formed by: Verb + Result Complement
The first verb is the action, and the second part (the complement) is the outcome.

Common Result Complements:

  1. 到 (dào): To achieve the goal of the action.

    • Example: 我看到一个朋友。 (Wǒ kàn dào yī gè péngyǒu.) - I saw a friend.

    • Example: 我听到音乐了。 (Wǒ tīng dào yīnyuè le.) - I heard the music.

    • 听 (tīng - to listen) + 到 = 听到 (tīng dào - to hear)

    • 看 (kàn - to look) + 到 = 看到 (kàn dào - to see)

  2. 懂 (dǒng): To understand as a result of an action.

    • Example: 这本书我看懂了。 (Zhè běn shū wǒ kàn dǒng le.) - I understood this book.

    • Example: 中文很难,我没听懂。 (Zhōngwén hěn nán, wǒ méi tīng dǒng.) - Chinese is difficult, I didn't understand (what I heard).

    • 听 (tīng) + 懂 = 听懂 (tīng dǒng - to understand what you hear)

    • 看 (kàn) + 懂 = 看懂 (kàn dǒng - to understand what you read/see)

  3. 完 (wán): To finish an action.

    • Example: 我的工作做完了。 (Wǒ de gōngzuò zuò wán le.) - I finished my work.

    • Example: 你吃完饭了吗? (Nǐ chī wán fàn le ma?) - Have you finished eating?

    • 吃 (chī - to eat) + 完 = 吃完 (chī wán - to finish eating)

    • 做 (zuò - to do) + 完 = 做完 (zuò wán - to finish doing)

Practice:
Choose the correct result complement (到, 懂, 完) to complete the sentence.

  1. 你说得太快,我没有听____。 (Nǐ shuō de tài kuài, wǒ méiyǒu tīng __.) - You spoke too fast, I didn't understand.
    (Answer: 懂)
