Introduction:
We learned about Result Complements. Now, let's talk about Directional Complements. These indicate the direction of an action. The simplest and most common ones are 来 (lái - to come) and 去 (qù - to go). They are added after another verb to show movement towards or away from the speaker.
The Basic Rule:
Verb + 来: Movement towards the speaker.
Example: 进来 (jìn lái) - to come in
Verb + 去: Movement away from the speaker.
Example: 进去 (jìn qù) - to go in
Think of a room:
If you are inside the room, you say: "请进来 (Qǐng jìn lái)" - "Please come in." (The person is moving towards you).
If you are outside the room, you say: "我进去了 (Wǒ jìn qù le)" - "I'm going in." (You are moving away from your current location).
More Common Examples:
上 (shàng - to ascend) + 来/去:
上来 (shàng lái) - to come up
上去 (shàng qù) - to go up
下 (xià - to descend) + 来/去:
下来 (xià lái) - to come down
下去 (xià qù) - to go down
回 (huí - to return) + 来/去:
回来 (huí lái) - to come back
回去 (huí qù) - to go back
Example in a Dialogue:
A (downstairs): 你在哪儿? (Nǐ zài nǎr?) - Where are you?
B (upstairs): 我在楼上,你快上来吧! (Wǒ zài lóu shàng, nǐ kuài shàng lái ba!) - I'm upstairs, come up quickly!
